Philadelphia school administrators are peeved at the number of teachers who are suddenly resigning or not showing up for work, just days before the school year begins.
Schools superintendent Arlene Ackerman says she's astounded that so many teachers have either resigned without 60 days' notice, put in longterm illness claims, or just not shown up for work during the previous week:
"It's been to our horror that, like I said, an average over the last week of 35 a day -- 35 resignations, or reports that teachers aren't coming back at the last minute, has been shocking to me."
