Barring action from Harrisburg, about one in seven city workers will be receiving layoff notices by Friday, as the mayor prepares to implement his "doomsday" plan. The move would affect hundreds of police officers.
Police commissioner Charles Ramsey met behind closed doors with some of the 739 policemen and women, and 43 support-staff workers who would be affected by layoffs:
"And you have to remember, I'm already 200 under where I was this time last year. So we're talking close to a thousand policemen. And this city cannot lose a thousand policemen. It makes no sense at all. It just cannot happen."
