Now that Harrisburg has finally resolved Mayor Nutter's budget woes, the next step -- and the one that will be most directly felt by Philadelphia residents and non-residents alike -- is a penny-on-the-dollar increase in the city sales tax.
The sales tax hike will take effect within a month, and is the single biggest item that will get the city out of its huge cash crunch.
By boosting the tax from seven percent to eight percent, an additional $10 million will flow into the government's general fund each month. Over five years, it will close $580 million of the $700-million shortfall.
