Bring on the Blackhawks: Flyers Heading to Stanley Cup Finals
KYW Newsradio Team Coverage
KYW’s Ed Benkin reports last month, the Flyers were a shootout loss away from missing the playoffs. Now, they’ll play for the Stanley Cup.
The Flyers improbable run through the playoffs continued Monday night with a conference championship. The Flyers defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-2, to win their Eastern Conference Final series in five games. The Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they will face the Western Conference champion Chicago Blackhawks.
In a matchup that featured the seventh and eighth seeds in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers finished off a Montreal team looking to write its own Cinderella story. After falling behind, 1-0, in the opening minute, the Flyers stormed back with three straight goals and took a 3-1 lead into the third period. Montreal cut the lead to 3-2, but Jeff Carter’s empty net goal sealed the victory and sent the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1997.
