Moyer, Phillies bullpen combine on 1-hitter
Ageless wonder Jamie Moyer unwinds Thursday
for the Phillies against the Marlins.
Jamie Moyer allowed one hit in seven innings to continue his domination of the Florida Marlins, Ryan Howard hit his 200th homer and the Philadelphia Phillies extended their winning streak to six games with a 4-0 victory Thursday night.
Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero pitched one perfect inning each to complete the one-hitter for the Phillies.
Moyer (9-6) limited Florida to two baserunners and departed after throwing 94 pitches. The 46-year-old left-hander — the oldest player in the majors — has won all eight of his career starts in Miami, and he's 13-2 overall against the Marlins.
"They like to swing and hit the ball hard," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "That kind of plays right into Moyer's game. That's what makes him pitch good."
Jorge Cantu led off the fifth with a single for the Marlins, their only hit of the game.
The Phillies have won 10 of their last 11 games and extended their lead in the National League East to five games over Florida.
"It's nice to win the first game back [after the All-Star break] and try to recreate some of the momentum we took into the break," Moyer said.
Chris Volstad (6-9) pitched six innings and allowed four runs, all on homers. He has given up 20 home runs this season.
All-star Raul Ibanez got Volstad twice, giving him 24 home runs on the season.
For his part, Howard reached the 200-homer milestone in fewer games than any player in major-league history.
Howard achieved the feat in his 658th game, hitting his 23rd home run of the season Thursday in the sixth inning at Florida.
Ralph Kiner was previously the fastest player to reach 200 home runs. He did it in 1950 after 706 games with Pittsburgh.
Howard has four homers in 15 career at-bats against Volstad. The slugger became the eighth Phillies player to reach the 200 mark.
