Now that the state is operating under a partial budget, the Rendell administration has begun notifying 255 state employees that their jobs are victims of this most difficult budget year.
The 255 layoffs were less than the 300 to 800 Governor Rendell had anticipated. The governor says the reason the number was contained was because the state’s workforce has been reduced through attrition.
Rendell says that retirements and a hiring freeze he instituted months ago have reduced the state employee ranks by 1,800 positions:
