President Obama, who walked out with the First Lady to sustained cheers, welcomed us to celebrate the power of words and music from both veteran artists and young up-and-comers. “The great jazz musician Louis Armstrong once said, ‘What we play is life,’ and that’s exactly what these artists do,” the president said. “They express the joys and hardships of life.”
Mrs. Obama said the event is something she’s wanted to do from Day One, to bring people of different backgrounds in the White House to speak their minds. “It is one thing for people to tell stories in their own spaces,” she explained, “But it’s something different entirely to tell them in this space.”
With that, bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding took the stage with pianist ELEW for a freeform jazz set. Spoken word poet Mayda del Valle was just starting a dope piece about her grandmother when—errr, the press was escorted out. I so wish I could have stayed longer, but enjoy the pics!
