Sugared Drinks Tax Opponents Stage Rally Outside City Hall
by KYW's Mark Abrams
A rally to oppose Mayor Nutter’s proposed tax on sugary drinks, including soda and chocolate milk, was being staged at noon Wednesday on Dilworth Plaza outside City Hall.
Representatives from the Teamsters' union, the beverage industry, convenience stores, bars and taverns were set to protest the mayor’s proposal to impose a two-cents-an-ounce tax on soda, sports drinks, and other beverages with added sugar to plug a $150-million gap in the city budget.
Teamsters' Union Local 830 president Danny Grace is leading the protest. His union represents drivers for the beverage industry. The union and the beverage distributers claim the tax would drastically cut sales and result in heavy job losses for the area.
