Phila. City Council Votes to Abolish Controversial Tax Board
by KYW's Mike Dunn
Philadelphia City Council on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a plan to abolish the much-reviled Board of Revision of Taxes, despite complaints by some BRT workers that they'll be out of work.
After months of discussion, speeches, and political wrangling, the vote was 15-2 as City Council gave final passage to the BRT reform measure.
This is the chief sponsor, Councilman Bill Green:
"Today, City Council took the crucial step to ensure that citizens of Philadelphia will have a property tax system that they can trust."
The vote came despite concerns about Mayor Nutter's plan to take some 80 patronage jobs at the BRT and make them civil service.
