1,000 State Layoffs if No Table Games Bill by Jan. 8th, Rendell Threatens

Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell has decided to release funding for several state universities even though a key piece of the state budget puzzle won’t be resolved until next year.
Rendell (in file photo above) says he will sign bills that will provide full funding for four state-related universities -- Temple, Pitt, Penn State, and Lincoln -- and he will provide partial funding for institutions that receive other so-called “non-preferred” appropriations.
But with state lawmakers now giving up on efforts to pass a table games bill before the end of the year, the governor warns that if it doesn’t get done in early January, he’ll have to freeze another $250 million in state spending.
