Police Step Up Enforcement of Bike Laws in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Police Department has begun an education and enforcement campaign targeting the city's most aggressive cyclists -- those riders who violate the motor vehicle code.
Uniformed bike officers, convened in Rittenhouse Square (above), got their orders from 9th District captain Dennis Wilson:
"If they run a red light, if they're flying in and out of traffic, riding on the sidewalk, for those violations we want to write them a traffic ticket."
After their roll call, the officers pedaled away to various intersections.
An equal number of bike messengers, many of whom often hang out in the square waiting for their next delivery, said they feel they are unfairly being singled out.
