Upper Darby Man Charged in Sword Attack on Police Officer

An Upper Darby man is behind bars on attempted murder charges, accused of trying to kill a police officer over the weekend using a "samurai" sword (similar to photo at right).

Police in Upper Darby (Delaware County), Pa. were called to the 4000 block of Dayton Road early Sunday morning after they received a 911 call that a man was threatening to blow up his house.

When they arrived, police superintendent Michael Chitwood says, they found 36-year-old George Rogers (top photo) barricaded in a bedroom:

"Fortunately, one of the officers was carrying a ballistic shield, and as he went through there the individual attacked the officer with a sword, knocking the officer down, and continued to strike at the officer with the sword.”
