Daryl Nutter, Section Representative, Market Frankford Blue Line, Transport Workers Union of Philadelphia, AFL-CIO, Local 234 embodies the best of the spirit of Black American entrepreneurs self-determination. And he stands up for jobs and workers concerning both individuals in unions and communities. Many times, depending on the workmanship, being an honest entrepreneur can lead to becoming a fair-minded politician. And as Daryl Nutter, yes there is a relation here within this Nutter to Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, continues to help Philadelphians overcome all obstacles in their quest for success strong families will become strong communities. Daryl Nutter, in a very similar fashion to his uncle who is building upon Philadelphia’s existing strengths to make a city safer, is building new strengths, in order to thrive and make a positive contribution to Philadelphia by endorsing Presidential Candidate Barack Obama. Obama and Clinton, the two rivals, will soon settle in for a six-week battle to win Pennsylvania. Daryl Nutter has worked for cooperation and collaboration for community activist like himself and social awareness political leaders to establish improved education, entrepreneurs and green-clean energy in Philadelphia. Speaking of entrepreneurs, let’s go over an old type that makes the skilled worker feel proud.
“Put the boot to Cliff Burrell, [a covering of leather, rubber, etc., for the foot and all or part of the leg], and he’ll take a shine to it,” said Eric Burrell. Eric, Cliff (grand son), and Jerry, will inherit their grandfather’s shine property. And there’s Cousin Terry too who are trying to keep their grand fathers dream alive. The shoe shop, ‘Cliff’s’ that is, has been open for over 60 years. Lets take a historical brief journey to where it all began.
Cliff Burrell began life in Gloucester County, Virginia. At the bottom of the depression in 1932 Cliff was seeking out a living as a saw laborer. But Eric’s grand father decided to follow his two brothers to Philadelphia. The promise of better things up north turned out to be a job shining shoes at 40th and Market Street for $250.00 a week, plus tips. Eric’s grand dad didn’t mind doing shoes. “I don’t know of anything I enjoy more than shining shoes,” Eric recalled his grand father once said. Cliff’s wife Mamie Burrell, who worked for the Philadelphia School Board, loved him very much. Mamie had his back as the two did every thing together in life. Cliff, always looking for a better way to do shoes, had his own shoe shine shop just two years later located a few doors away at 109 S. 40th Street. For one thing Cliff developed his own formula for the shoeshine.
According to Eric, Cliff the entrepreneur also invented a shoeshine known as ‘the shine the world will beat its feet to get to.’ Cliff’s electric buffers and gooseneck cables would make the shine last for literally 30 days or more. Burrell’s scientific approach to shoe shining is reflected by the sign on his shops window that says, ‘Footwear Maintenance Engineer.” Cliff had the word “engineer” tacked on as a kind of joke. But “there is of course a lot of truth in it,” said Eric. Looking at truth, what’s the truth about breakfast on WVSR 1360.1AM?
