March Madness may get some workers mad, because their employers don't want them overloading company computers during business hours to watch college basketball games on their networks. More than 60 NCCA tournament games are available online at cbssports.com for the first time, without online blackouts of games airing on TV stations like CBS3. Some smaller companies may be concerned that live streaming video will slow or crash computer networks. Wachovia Bank's Jim Baum says 'hey, they're a bank, and they block workers from that type of Internet use at all times,' to preserve productivity, and bandwidth for business related activities: "That's not something we do just for the NCAAs. It's what we do 24/7 - 365." Computer consultant Walter Betson says I-T managers do have recourse: "Go to their Firewall and just block out the sites that are affiliated with that particular event." Secure computing -- which makes filtering technology for computer networks -- says the tournament is the single most dreaded event, due to bandwidth and productivity concerns. One tool, called "Smartfilter," blocks employees from the online coverage. Another called "Webwasher," slows streaming of video to a crawl, making watching the games painful. |
