The new year was beginning for Philadelphia school students on Tuesday.
This year, under the first year of Superintendent Arlene Ackerman's (photo) five-year plan, 1,300 new teachers were hired to reduce class sizes in primary grades:
"We will see, in grades kindergarten through grade three, our class sizes are going down from 30-1 to 24-1."
Ackerman vows that kids will have enough textbooks. To get ready for the start of classes, she says the central office is using a color-coded inventory tracker to make sure books are in place, where they're needed:
