Treasure of North Philadelphia Open House, Saturday April 25

Saturday, April 25, 12 - 6 pm
Explore the wealth of art and culture of Central North Philadelphia on Saturday, April 25th, as over a dozen organizations open their doors to kick-off the North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance, an initiative dedicated to promoting the diverse arts and culture organizations of North Philadelphia and establishing this district as a destination for cultural, visual and performing arts.
SPECIAL EVENTS
12 pm
Opening Remarks and Performances, Tyler School of Art
Join Sheryl Conkelton, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs, Shayna V. McConville, Program Coordinator, and Valerie Lagauskas, Senior Director, Avenue of the Arts, Inc., as we kick off the Open House and the launch of the North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance. In addition, dance and music performances by Temple University students will take place throughout the afternoon. 12th and Norris Streets, first floor lobby.
12 - 1 pm
The Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection, which houses over 500,000 books, manuscripts, pamphlets, journals, broadsides, posters, photographs, and rare ephemera on the global black experience, will be open especially for this event. 1330 West Berks Mall, first floor.
12 - 4 pm
The Philadelphia Doll Museum's Executive Director, Barbara Whiteman, will be present to discuss the history of the collection and the museum's mission. North Broad and Dauphin Streets.
1 - 2 pm
The Uptown Theater will host a special tour and video presentation. The historic theater, which hosted big-name R&B and Motown acts including the Supremes, the Temptations and Marvin Gaye, is now being restored by the Uptown Entertainment and Development Corporation. Space is limited; the first twenty people will be admitted. Meet at 2227 North Broad Street.
1 - 3 pm
The Wagner Free Institute of Science will open their doors on Saturday, April 25th. Not normally open to the public on weekends, this is a special chance to experience a Victorian science museum in a National Historic Landmark. 17th and Montgomery Streets.
1 - 2 pm and 2 - 3 pm
Take a tour with the Village of Arts and Humanities and explore North Philadelphia in a new way. The Village's urban landscape projects include large mosaic sculptures surrounded by gardens and pathways in reclaimed vacant land. Each tour will be approximately one hour. Please wear comfortable shoes, no open toe shoes or sandals. Meet at 2544 Germantown Avenue.
2 - 3 pm and 3 - 4 pm
Tour of the new Tyler School of Art facility led by a Tyler School of Art Bachelor of Fine Arts candidates. Learn about the new building, the various departments at Tyler, and Tyler's many offerings, including the Rome program, which the tour guides have been residents of. 12th and Norris Streets, first floor lobby.
4:15 - 5 pm
Art Sanctuary presents a talk with artist Richard Watson at the Church of the Advocate. Between 1973 and 1976, Watson, along with fellow artist Walter Edmonds, painted 14 murals in the Church of the Advocate illustrating biblical texts using the Black experience in America, including slavery, emancipation, and scenes from the Civil Rights Movement. 18th and Diamond Streets.
6 - 7 pm
Closing Reception, The Arts Garage
Please join all of us at The Arts Garage to celebrate the launch of the North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance. The Arts Garage will provide complimentary live music, hor d'oeuvres, and drink specials. 1533 Ridge Avenue.

A free shuttle bus, courtesy of Temple University's Facilities Management, will loop this neighborhood starting at 12:30 pm. Included stops are: Tyler School of Art, Village of Arts and Humanities, Uptown Theater, Philadelphia Doll Museum, Church of the Advocate, Wagner Free Institute of Science, Beech Companies, The Arts Garage, and Cerulean Arts. A schedule will be posted online and available at each location the day of the event.
RAFFLE
We will be raffling off many fabulous prizes, including gifts from the Mural Arts Program; one-year memberships to Temple Gallery and the Wagner Free Institute of Science; a gift certificate to the Draught Horse restaurant and bar; tickets to Art Sanctuary's 25th Annual Celebration of Black Writing Festival; and much, much more! Information and raffle sign-ups will be available at each location the day of the event.
