Erinn Thompson
Erinn Thompson is Virginia's second highly regarded recruit from 2009.
Erinn Thompson, the No. 15 ranked player in the 2009 class according to HoopGurlz.com, verbally committed to the University of Virginia and coach Debbie Ryan on Tuesday.
Thompson chose Virginia out of a final group that included Boston College, Florida, Miami, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. She is the second player this spring to commit to the Cavaliers with last month's commitment of Lexie Gerson, a highly regarded perimeter player from the Philadelphia area.
Thompson's versatile game will be on display in the ACC next season.
Erinn Thompson brings versatility to the
post.
"I can't even explain it," Thompson said after committing. "I'm so happy. Virginia is such a great school and I really feel Virginia is the best fit for me."
Thompson is a 6-foot-3 post who has incredible versatility because of her skill-set and agility. She is a very gifted passer and scorer and can take advantage of mismatches both inside and out. Her range extends to the 3-point line and she can score on either block with her back to the basket.
The critical part of the transition for most high school kids is building strength, something her high school coach, Brian Robinson, said she is committed to. She is making the effort needed in the weight room.
The connection Thompson had with Ryan is something she points to as a major factor in her choosing Virginia. She also noticed in her two unofficial visits that the team is extremely close in addition to being a winning program.
"I was shocked that such a competitive team was that close," Thompson said.
Thompson plans to study journalism and will also look into to law school. In the mean time, she wants to continue improving her mental approach to the game. She lacked confidence in her abilities as a freshman and sophomore but started to find it this season, something she intends to build on with her club team, the Winston-Salem Stealers, during the spring and summer.
