Terry Smith is the Zoo's Volunteer Program Manager. She says don't think that means you get to sit around and play with the monkeys:
“They guide tours around the zoo, they run programs for school groups that come in, you might find a docent in front of an exhibit, holding an artifact, staffing what we call a Just Ask cart, so we can encourage our guests to learn more about the animals that we have at the zoo.”
Potential docents go through a 20-week training class and, after they graduate, have to commit to from 60 to 90 hours a year volunteering at the Zoo.
Those interested should visit the zoo on the web atwww.philadelphiazoo.org.
