Before leaving for a days worth of clean-up activities around the city, Mayor Nutter expressed his gratitude to volunteers who turned out for the Philly Spring Clean-Up. The goal -- when the day is done – to have collected one millionpounds of trash across the city.
The much-anticipated Citywide Philly Spring Clean-Up is underway in the city. Volunteers met outside City Hall Saturday morning as Mayor Nutter got the day started.
Before leaving for a days worth of clean-up activities around the city, Mayor Nutter expressed his gratitude to volunteers who turned out for the Philly Spring Clean-Up (see related story). But the Mayor says this is more than just a one day event:
“This is not just about cleaning up Philadelphia, although that is very important and desperately needed, but I want people to get used to doing these kinds of things on a regular basis.”
Robert Hooks is a block captain in Southwest Philadelphia and he did not have to be asked twice to be a part of this day:
“We need this really badly because the city is deteriorating and its time for everybody to step up and do their part to keep the city looking beautiful, the way it is.”
The goal is -- when the day is done -- one million pounds of trash will be picked up across the city. For more information on the web, go to www.phillycleanup.com or call 215-686-1776.
KYW’s Hadas Kuznits reports local high school students were among thousands cleaning up around Philadelphia Saturday as part of Mayor Michael Nutter's initiative to beautify the city.
The students at Ben Franklin High School were pitching in for a good cause:
“We are cleaning up this entire area.”
“We are replanting and picking up weeds.”
“We want Philly to look nice.”
“We are all coming together to make this place better.”
The students have adopted Spring Garden Street and they are trying to make it live up to its name:
“Lot of people talk about how we don’t care about our streets but as teenagers we came out here to help clean up because it is a worthy cause, and I think more people should get out here and do it.”
“Once you clean up Philadelphia a little bit, people will not think it is so bad.”
