The Guardian Angels were planning to meet at 1pm on Wednesday with Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey; the groups is seeking free fares for their patrols of Septa subways.
Guardian Angels' president Curtis Slewa says patrolling the Septa system isn't cheap. He says Wednesday's meeting was set to bring together the Angels, Commissioner Ramsey, and Septa:
"To try explore free fares privilege in return for the additional patrols that the Philadelphia Guardian Angels have put into the Septa system. It costs us two bucks a throw each time you go in and out of the system."
The Guardian Angels who volunteer their patrols travel at their expense from as far away as New York, and towns in New Jersey like Millville.
Curtis Slewa says they're not asking for reimbursement of those expenses, only the expenses incurred for patrols on city transit.
The patrols come in the wake of recent attacks on or near subway platforms in Center City.
