Historic Philadelphia Prison Opens Two New Exhibit Spaces
by KYW's John McDevitt
Two new exhibits at the historic Eastern State Penitentiary will be unlocked for the public this weekend.
"Visitors always ask if they can go up into the guard towers -- they ask every day."
But the small spaces at the former prison in Fairmount can't safely accommodate visitors to the towers, according to program director Sean Kelley. He says those requests led to the development of "Towercam," a new interactive exhibit that features remote-control cameras and large-screen monitors:
"There are two cameras -- one facing north, one facing south. They are on the catwalks of the guard tower. They are remote controlled -- they are controlled from the exhibit space -- so your eyeball is right there where a guard's eyeball would be."
