Mayor Nutter Zaps Former Mayor's Appointment of Own Son
The former mayor's son is outta here, as the new mayor, Michael Nutter, moves quickly on his campaign pledge to overhaul zoning and planning in Philadelphia.
Mayor John Street, at the very end of his tenure, installed his son Sharif (photo above) as one of five mayoral representatives on the Zoning Code Commission -- a panel charged with rewriting the city's antiquated zoning code top to bottom.
Now, just as quickly, Sharif Street is gone. Mayor Nutter has installed his own five picks, and Sharif is not among them.
Nutter's spokesman, Doug Oliver, says it was nothing personal:
"He looked at the people that he had on his radar screen, that he thought could accomplish that task, (and) thanked Sharif and everyone else for their service."
The mayor's action came just one day after he appointed an entirely new Zoning Board of Adjustment, the body that handles variances for development projects in the city.
Nutter also named five new members for the City Planning Commission, the panel that advises City Council on new projects. Local AFL-CIO chief Pat Eiding, a John Street appointee, is staying on.
