Denzel Does It Again; Debaters' leads NAACP Image Award nominations

BEVERLY HILLS

The Great Debaters, a film drama loosely based on the real-life victories of a black debating team in the 1930s, topped the list of nominees announced Tuesday for the 39th NAACP Image Awards. Girlfriends and Everybody Hates Chris led TV nominees.

The Great Debaters collected eight nominations, including outstanding motion picture and both outstanding actor and outstanding director for Denzel Washington. The movie also garnered three supporting-actor nominations for Forest Whitaker, Nate Parker and Denzel Whitaker.

Other best-picture nominees were American Gangster,I Am Legend,Talk to Me and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?

Other outstanding-actor nominees were Columbus Short for Stomp the Yard, Don Cheadle for Talk to Me, Terrence Howard for Pride and Will Smith for I Am Legend.

Nominated for outstanding actress were Jurnee Smollett for The Great Debaters, Angelina JolieA Mighty Heart, Halle Berry for Things We Lost In the Fire, Jill Scott for Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and Taraji P. Henson for Talk To Me.

In television categories, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends had seven nominations each, including best TV comedy.

In music categories, the nominees for outstanding album were Alicia Keys' As I Am, Chris Brown's Exclusive, Kanye West's Graduation,Growing Pains by Mary J. Blige and System by Seal.

The Image Awards honor those who promote diversity in the arts. Awards in 44 categories, including literature, will be presented Feb. 14 in a Los Angeles ceremony broadcast live on Fox.

Ninabel De Jesus a community and newspaper/magazine activist. She is the Special Volunteer of The Phila. Front Page News and WVSR1360 Playground of Hope project. The project is for helping children with disability using magazines and radio. From Dominican Republic, she leads the magazine and community-based operation that respects and celebrates the cultural richness of the Dominican and Latin experiences. And she is a translator for those who have difficulty understanding spoken English. Changing The Symbolism Of The Color Black

I am Van Stone, author and syndicated columnist, and I invite people from all intercultural backgrounds to join the Van Stone Productions Foundation. My hope is that, through the media, I can teach men, women, and children the importance of joining the organization Van Stone Productions Foundation (VSP) which helps to define the color “black.” I had exactly what VSP members were looking for when I used the admired works of Dr. Seuss’, “My Many Colored Days” to come up with the “Expression of Black” in the color black.

I assign colors to moods and emotions as was Dr. Seuss’ signature. VSP brings colors (nationalities) and images (crafts) together as one family/community. I believe that black means happy. I like to say, "The thoughts of happy men generate good company for positive people."

"Unfortunately the color of black has been blamed for many tragedies. Such as dressing in black during school shootings, being black-listed or black-balled, evil, etc.," I'd also say, "The color black has been synonymous with many negative things and subconsciously the color black creates negative thoughts for many people.

I desire that the color black be re-designed and created in a whole new expression, just like green is for earth day, blue is for jean day, silver is for a 25th anniversary.

I have created a PEACE DAY for the wearing of the color black to stop unduly influencing people with the symbolism of the color black having negative connotations. On PEACE DAYS, all days are great for reading, honoring grandparents, doing any type of planting, telling close friends that you are glad to have them as a real friend, and hanging out in your library. PEACE DAYS are also for conversing about your favorite realistic fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, mascots, or superheroes who may represent the color black. Then it would be good to draw the shape of a black rose or heart.
