Okay, sports fans… just as all the gear coalesced into my bags from on the tv room floor, so the planning is beginning to come together for this little around the block trip. Arrived in Cherry Hill, NJ, yesterday, at the home of my close friend, Ellie. I will leave on what should be a trip of somewhat more than 10,000 miles tomorrow morning. A little gathering should be seeing me off around 10 am.
The last few days have been a flurry of activity with continued trip planning, finishing up about seven photo albums for pick up, and the usual business at hand.
But as all the doubts surface and the confidence rallies, the excitement is definitely building. Launching oneself into the unknown always has an element of nervousness and outright fear. But with all the steady and intricate planning, the good wishes from friends, and the experience behind me, it's more like wonder than worry. And it's more like real living than just getting by day to day.
The purposes of this particular ride are few, but all strong - to ride, to write, to visit folks rarely seen, and to learn from folks newly met. There will be little deviating from those three - until Canada at least. I've covered most of this USA ground on motorcycle or bicycle, but the TransCanada highway from one end to another - now THAT'S another story.
A couple notes:
- It's always good to hear from folks on the road. If you have suggestions, or ideas of things I should mention, or questions about things please don't hesitate to write me.
- This technology is quite amazing, eh? I often think back, and will often refer to here, my 1980 cross country bicycle ride (4,300+ miles, three months, ocean-to-ocean), and there was no cell phone, no laptop to bring along, no internet, no wireless connection to the hearts of folks back home. How different it was!!! (BTW, anyone with Skype out there? I'm “joelperlish” on Skype. If you see me on, give a shout. Might not be able to speak long, but it would sure be a hoot to connect that way. For those who don't know, Skype, among other things, is a way to speak and SEE the other person talking in real time. It can be between any two people ANYwhere in the world as long as they have the equipment, the connection, and the software - and it's FREE.
- There will likely be one or two pictures with each journal entry. But I'm working on a site which will have many of the pictures of things I describe for those who have the inclination to visit there.
- I'd love to have a tenacious proofreader out there who could send me corrections in spelling or grammar. And who could give me true feedback about how the writing is going.
- I'll be writing on a white 13” MacBook. And most of the time will be transmitting to the internet through a wireless Verizon VZ device that plugs into the laptop, and then connects right to the broadband spectrum wirelessly - from just about anywhere. Just amazing!

- It's wonderful having you folks on my shoulders - somewhat like a Greek Chorus whispering in my ear along the way. Reading is a dying enjoyment. But it's words, and the thoughts they spark along, that is part of what makes being human so wonderful and so glorious. And, it's my hope that I can string along a few words that translate well some of my experience this summer. So that vicariously you all can be riding along and learning with me. One thing for sure, I'll let you know how things go - the good fortune and the bad luck, the happinesses and the down days - and there will be nothing scripted about this little journey….

(*)(*)(*)(*

Below is Appendix One - All the gear that's brought along… Perhaps you'll find the list a little dry, but it's none-the-less one of the most important things one can do before such a journey. Think I missed anything???

Famed Tuskegee Airmen Will Gather in Philadelphia Next Month

The 37th convention of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen will be held in Philadelphia this year -- July 17th through 20th -- with an emphasis on educating young people about America's first black military pilots.

Dr. Eugene Richardson, now 83 (lower left in photo), started flying when he was 17, went to Tuskegee in 1944, and got his wings two months before the end of World War II in Europe:

"I tell the kids that when Hitler heard I was on my way over, he said, kaput! Gave it up!"

Microsoft to stop selling Windows XP on Monday

In this photo provided by Microsoft, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, right, speaks to employees as CEO Steve Ballmer looks on, during a farewell event celebrating Gates years at Microsoft, on his last day as a full-time employee, at company headquarters in Redmond, Washington, June 27, 2008.

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, right, shakes ands with Switzerland's Roger Federer, after being defeated in their Men's Singles, fourth round match on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, Monday, June 30, 2008.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova were ousted in the fourth round Monday, leaving Wimbledon without any of the top four women in the quarterfinals for the first time.

A hobbled Jankovic fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tamarine Tanasugarn, while 2004 U.S. Open champion Kuznetsova lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to 19-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

With top-seeded Ana Ivanovic and No. 3 Maria Sharapova eliminated last week, none of the top four women reached the quarterfinals - the first time that's happened at Wimbledon and also the first time at any Grand Slam tournament in the 40-year history of the Open era.

The highest seeded player left is No. 5 Elena Dementieva, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Shahar Peer.

The Williams sisters, meanwhile, moved closer to another Wimbledon final with back-to-back victories on Court 2 - nicknamed the "Graveyard of Champions" for its history of upsets. They questioned why they weren't put on Centre Court or Court 1.

Defending champion Venus Williams beat Russian teenager Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-4, while two-time winner Serena downed Bethanie Mattek - the only other American left in the men's or women's draw - 6-3, 6-3.

"It wasn't what I would have liked to see," Serena Williams said of the Court 2 scheduling. "Initially, I thought, 'Is this the right schedule?' I thought maybe there was a mistake. But I can't dwell on that. I just have to focus on doing the best that I can whether I'm on Court 2 or Court 20."

In men's play, five-time champion Roger Federer swept Lleyton Hewitt - the last man to win the title before him - 7-6 (7), 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court to extend his winning streak on grass to 63 matches and 38 in a row at the All England Club. Federer, who served 21 aces, has now beaten his Australian rival in 12 consecutive matches.

Federer will next face the last player to beat him on grass and at Wimbledon - Croatian Mario Ancic, who won in the first round in 2002. Ancic came from two sets down Monday to beat Fernando Verdasco 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 13-11. The final set alone lasted 1 hour, 35 minutes.

"I completely underestimated him back in 2002," Federer said. "I was a little shellshocked and didn't know what happened to me. What it taught me was not to underestimate any opponent."

No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal, runner-up to Federer the last two years, overcame an injury scare in the second game of the match and beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal slipped on the worn turf behind the baseline on Court 1 while stretching to hit a forehand, with his right leg bending awkwardly. After losing the point, he took a medical timeout, and a trainer wrapped his leg below the knee. The Spaniard lost the next point and the game, but showed no sign of trouble and dominated the rest of the way.

"I feel something behind the knee, but it seems better," the four-time French Open champion said. "I'm going to get it checked for a precaution but I hope that I'm fine."

Playing with her left knee heavily strapped, Jankovic was never in serious contention against the 60th-ranked Tanasugarn. The 31-year-old Thai, playing in her 12th consecutive Wimbledon, also was treated for a lower back problem during changeovers in the second set.

After converting on match point to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time, Tanasugarn covered her face with her hands and broke into tears.

"Wow, wow, wow," Tanasugarn said. "Being in the fourth round so many years, making it to the quarterfinals is really a good feeling."

Jankovic, who complained about being scheduled out on Court 18, said she played with a tear in her knee sustained during her third-round win Friday over Caroline Wozniacki.

"I was always a step behind," said the Serb, who committed 19 unforced errors. "It was very hard for me. I tried the best I could and she was quite solid and didn't make any mistakes. I wasn't moving the way I usually move. I just couldn't play at my best."

Venus Williams, a four-time Wimbledon winner, nearly squandered a 5-1 lead in the second set against the 18-year-old Kleybanova. She lost nine points in a row from her third match point in the eighth game and saved three break points at 5-4 before finally closing it with a backhand volley winner.

Serena Williams wobbled slightly after going up 3-0 in the second set as Mattek raised her game by playing serve-and-volley. Williams received a warning for an audible obscenity in the fifth game, but that didn't stop her as she won the next five points. She finished the match with a backhand drop volley into the open court.

Venus Williams, who will face Tanasugarn in the quarters, was clearly not happy with the court scheduling.

"There's not too much I'm going to say about that in the press," she said. "I think that no matter where we play we realize we have to play well. That's pretty much all I have to say."

Her father, Richard Williams, didn't hold back.

"Venus is a four-time champion, defending champion," he said. "They're not putting Roger Federer out there (on Court 2). If they're not putting Roger Federer out there, they shouldn't put Venus out there. I think it's ridiculous. I think it's a damn shame."

All England Club spokesman Johnny Perkins said the tournament referee had to schedule 16 matches on the same day, and noted that Courts 2 and 18 are show courts.

"Spectators on Court 2 have paid for their tickets" and should get to see top players, he said.

Between them, Venus and Serena have won six of the last eight women's singles titles at Wimbledon. They're in opposite halves of the draw and could meet in the final Saturday. The Williams sisters faced each other in the 2002 and '03 finals, with Serena winning both.

Federer, who hasn't lost a set while chasing his sixth straight title, was in complete command against Hewitt after scraping through the first-set tiebreaker. At 7-all, Federer mis-hit a backhand and the ball was ruled wide, but a replay showed it hit the sideline and the point was replayed. Federer then hit a backhand winner for 8-7, and an ace gave him the set.

Hewitt, the 2002 Wimbledon champion whose career has been slowed by a chronic hip injury, went 0-8 on break points.

"I saw Lleyton struggling with his hip a little bit," Federer said. "That first set tiebreaker really put me on the winning streak and after that I played consistently well."

Hewitt, who said he's not sure if he'll play in the Beijing Olympics or U.S. Open because of his hip troubles, praised Federer's serve.

"He hit every line out there today," the Australian said. "That's why he's the best player around, especially on this surface. Serve is so important. He hit the target every time."

Also advancing was Chinese wild-card entry Zheng Jie, who followed up her upset of Ivanovic last week to beat 19-year-old Hungarian Agnes Szavay 6-3, 6-4. Zheng was down 4-1 in the second set and then won five games in a row before securing her first Grand Slam quarterfinal berth.

Other women's winners were Nicole Vaidisova, who downed No. 8 Anna Chakvetadze 4-6, 7-6 (0), 6-3; and Nadia Petrova, a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Alla Kudryavtseva, who had beaten Sharapova in the second round.

Obama: I will never question others' patriotism

Obama: I will never question others' patriotism

AP Photo
Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., waves to supporters as he arrives for a campaign event at the Truman Memorial Building in Independence, Mo., on Monday, June 30, 2008.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Monday he will never question others' patriotism during the race and blames his own "carelessness" for some criticism of him so far.

Obama sought to reassure voters about his commitment to the country, choosing the aptly named town of Independence as his backdrop.

Questions about his patriotism were raised during the Democratic nomination fight, and Obama recently started wearing a flag pin on his lapel in one attempt to answer them. But a weeklong focus on American values in the run-up to Friday's July 4 holiday represents his most concerted effort so far to do so.

Obama said he chose the topic in part because of his experience during the race, even though he has always considered his love of country a given and his inspiration for running for office.

"I have found, for the first time, my patriotism challenged - at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for," he said before a crowd of a few hundred people at the Truman Memorial Building here. "I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine."

Obama also sought to tamp down controversy surrounding comments over the weekend from a supporter. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark said in a television appearance that the Vietnam War-era military service of John McCain, Obama's Republican opponent, does not necessarily qualify him to be commander in chief.

McCain was a fighter pilot who was captured and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years.

Obama said that patriotism "must, if it is to mean anything, involve the willingness to sacrifice" and sought to distance himself from Clark's remarks without mentioning them.

"For those like John McCain who have endured physical torment in service to our country - no further proof of such sacrifice is necessary," Obama said. "And let me also add that no one should ever devalue that service, especially for the sake of a political campaign, and that goes for supporters on both sides."

The comment drew loud applause.

At a news conference in Harrisburg, Pa., McCain was asked about Clark's comments.

"I think that that kind of thing is unnecessary," McCain said. "I'm proud of my record of service, I have plenty of friends, leaders who will attest to that.

"The important thing is if that's the kind of campaign Senator Obama and his surrogates and supporters want to engage in, I understand that. But it doesn't reduce the price of gas by one penny. It doesn't achieve our energy independence or make it come any closer. Doesn't make any American stay in their home who's at risk of losing it today. And it certainly doesn't do anything to address the challenges Americans have in keeping their jobs, homes and supporting their families."

Separately, in a statement, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "As he's said many times before, Sen. Obama honors and respects Senator McCain's service, and of course he rejects yesterday's statement by Gen. Clark."

Dear Fox News,

It is as apparent today as it was in the minds of Jeff Davis, Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, the KKK, White Citizens Council and other notable adherents to the doctrine of White Supremacy that the Mission of FOX NEWS is to serve as the chief propaganda organ of the flag draped, cross displaying, bible misinterpreting, NEOCON dominated, fearmongering, hate mongering, WAR mongering, New Republican Party.

As such, (republican propagandist) it is also apparent that your intent at FOX is to redefine AMERICA. To you not only does KKK biblical interpretation serve as the matrix of a White racist god and Christianity but also a worldview that has adopted a presupposed devine mandate to prefer and bring forth a fascist dictatorship to replace the U.S. Constitutional Democratic Republic, that is still publically spoken of as our offical governmental structure.

Pure and simple You are guilty of polarizing American Citizens and aiding and abetting TREASON, while mouthing the words of patriotism.

You are an American corporate entity in America. You are not America. WE the People are the United States Of America. All Of Us.
We are determinned to go forward....Black, Brown, Red, Yellow and White together. The Civil War was decided in 1865. The modern overwhelming majority of us choose to be a nation of laws and not a nation of White men.
We choose neither EMPIRE, SLAVERY and the embarrassment of foolishness.

WE The People are already organized and it is a small matter to serve notice on your advertisers. Is that what you want? Are you really that devoted to the god of White racism?

The ignornant White Americans that you claim as your base and appeal to with your White racist fear and smear are first and foremost God's ignorant children. The recommended prudent course of action for FOX NEWS is to hear and heed the word of the creator and sustainer of your ignorant constituency: "LET MY PEOPLE GO."

Quit fanning the embers of American White Racism. For what will it profit anyone to gain the whole world and lose your SOUL?

It's a new day. Let it be.

Bill Clinton.

"He's saying he's not going to reach out, that Obama has to come to him. One person told me that Bill said Obama would have to quote kiss my ass close quote, if he wants his support.

"You can't talk like that about Obama - he's the nominee of your party, not some house boy you can order around.

"Hillary's just getting on with it and so should Bill."

Another Democrat said that despite polls showing Mr Obama with a healthy lead over Republican John McCain, Mr Clinton doesn't think he can win.

The party strategist, who was allied to one of the early rivals to Mr Obama and the former First Lady, said Mr Clinton was "very unhopeful" about the nominee's prospects in November.

"Bill Clinton knows the party will unite behind Obama, but he is telling people he doesn't believe Obama can win round voting groups, especially working-class whites, in the swing states," the strategist said.

************ ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ****

First of all Jerric Sampson, thank you for the Obama updates, especially this one. They have all been very helpful. You are on the case.

Being born and raised in the Apartheid southern USA I have held forever that the grunt jim crow "enforcers" would not still ne in extistence without the tacit approval, aid and support of power players like Bill Clinton.

Ironically the state of Arkansas produced another liberal Govenor who was a perfect Bill Clinton match, more than fifty years ago. Few people would guess that the man who was Gov.of Arkansas in the days of the Little Rock Nine was a liberal democrat gone wild in the fashion of Bill Clinton. Orval Eugene Faubus bore a striking resemblance to LBJ, attended a liberal college and was veiwed like socially like Clinton because his politics had been like Bill's until he faced an election where his oponents used his liberalism against him. In order to win the good Gov. decided to get with the conservative, white racist program, let it all hang out and make the confederate fathers proud of him. Ironic or maybe not that another native Arkansan and former Gov. would be found stumbling down the same white racist route in 2008, deluded by the so called first law of nature headed for a collision with all of the laws of nature's God.

"Bill Clinton knows the party will unite behind Obama, but he is telling people he doesn't believe Obama can win round voting groups, especially working-class whites, in the swing states," the strategist said.

I say Bill doesn't want Obama to win in November. Let us get busy and count the reasons why.

Bill Clinton has been too full of Bill Clinton for some time, and now he is begging even Bob Johnson and the remaining most star struck and deluded fans of color to please believe, "I aint into y'all like that."

"He's saying he's not going to reach out, that Obama has to come to him. One person told me that Bill said Obama would have to quote, kiss my ass, close quote, if he wants his support.

Evidently Bill Clinton doesn't understand that "YES WE CAN" includes stop kissing ass.

Bill, going forward looks like you might hafta kiss your own ass Bubba.

Orval Eugene Faubus was born in Arkansas on 7th January 1910. His father, Sam Faubus, was an active member of the Socialist Party and gave his son the middle name Eugene after one of his heroes, Eugene Debs. As a child Faubus was told by his father that "capitalism was a fraud and that both poor whites and blacks were its victims".

Faubus trained to be a teacher at Commonwealth College in Arkansas. He became interested in politics and joined the Democratic Party. Despite his upbringing by a racially tolerant socialist, Faubus became increasingly right-wing in his views.

During the Second World War Faubus joined the United States Army and rose to the rank of major in Army Intelligence. After the war he returned home and continued in politics, becoming the State Highway Commissioner.

In 1954 Faubus ran for governor as a liberal promising to increase spending on schools and roads. Although portrayed as a "dangerous radical", Faubus was successfully elected. In the first few months of his administration Faubus desegregated state buses and public transportation. He also began to investigate the possibility of introducing multi-racial schools. This resulted in him being attacked by Jim Johnson, the leader of the right-wing of the party in Arkansas.

Faubus later told a journalist working for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that "it is true in politics as it is in life that survival is the first law.". Fearing he would lose office Faubus decided to fight the decision by the Supreme Court in 1954 that separate schools were not equal and were therefore unconstitutional.

In 1957, Faubus used the National Guard to stop black children from attending the Little Rock Central High School. On 24th September, 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower, went on television and told the American people: "At a time when we face grave situations abroad because of the hatred that communism bears towards a system of government based on human rights, it would be difficult to exaggerate the harm that is being done to the prestige and influence and indeed to the safety of our nation and the world. Our enemies are gloating over this incident and using it everywhere to misrepresent our whole nation."

After trying for eighteen days to persuade Faubus to obey the ruling of the Supreme Court, Eisenhower decided to send federal troops to Arkansas to ensure that black children could go to Little Rock Central High School. The white population of Little Rock were furious that they were being forced to integrate their school and Faubus described the federal troops as an army of occupation.

Faubus was elected governor of Arkansas six times and served in the post for twelve years. After the 1965 Voting Act, making it easier for African Americans to vote, Faubus political career came to an end. Attempts in 1970, 1974 and 1986 all ended in failure.
Orval Faubus died of cancer in December 1994.

In all your getting get Understanding and hava great life.

Progressively yours,

Bob Cross. 6/29/2008

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., center, poses for photo with Christian Evangelist Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham at the Graham family mountain top retreat in Montreat , N.C., Sunday, June 29, 2008.

MONTREAT, N.C. (AP) -- John McCain met Sunday with evangelist Billy Graham and his son, Franklin, at the family's mountaintop retreat.

The Republican presidential candidate, who is actively courting religious voters and trying to reassure skeptical conservatives, visited privately with the Grahams on the grounds of Little Piney Cove in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina.

"We had a very excellent conversation. I appreciated the opportunity to visit with them," McCain said after the 45-minute meeting.

McCain's visit to North Carolina was his first sit-down with Billy Graham, 89, and with Franklin Graham, although McCain and the elder Graham are acquainted. McCain's father and Billy Graham also knew each other.

The world-renowned evangelist is in poor health but apparently felt well enough to visit with McCain, who flew to North Carolina with the expectation of meeting only with Franklin Graham, who is president and chief executive of the evangelistic association his father founded in 1950.

McCain said he did not know if the Grahams would vote for him. "I didn't ask for their votes," he said, calling them "great leaders."

After the meeting, Franklin Graham issued a statement praising the Arizona senator's "personal faith and his moral clarity."

"The senator and I both have sons currently serving in the military, and also have a common interest in aviation," Franklin Graham said. "I was impressed by his personal faith and his moral clarity on important social issues facing America today."

Franklin Graham said his father told a story about meeting McCain's father, a Navy admiral, on a trip to Vietnam during the war when John McCain was being held as a prisoner of war after his military plane was shot out of the sky. The two prayed for John McCain during his captivity.

Franklin Graham said his father "expressed gratitude for the senator's long and brave service" to the country.

"We had an opportunity to pray for the senator and his family, and for God's will to be done in this upcoming election," Franklin Graham said.

He said he was not endorsing anyone for president, but was urging "men and women of faith everywhere" to vote and be involved in the political process.

"I encourage people to vote for the candidate at every level who best represents their values and convictions, and then to pray for those in authority over us as required in Scripture," Franklin Graham said.

McCain said last week that he did not consider the meeting with Franklin Graham a political one. Earlier this month, Barack Obama, McCain's Democratic rival, met with the younger Graham, who was among some 30 evangelicals Obama met with in Chicago.

"He is a man whose family is respected, incredibly respected, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to meet with him," McCain said of Franklin Graham. "I think the Graham family really transcends politics in America. Billy Graham was an adviser to every president and so I'm not sure that there is any - there certainly is no political aspect to the meeting that I will have."

Meanwhile, in Washington, Gen. Wesley Clark challenged McCain's claim to be better prepared to be president.

Clark said that while he honored McCain's service as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam war and on the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain has no executive experience and that the Navy squadron McCain commanded was not a wartime squadron.

"He hasn't been there and ordered the bombs to fall," Clark said on "Face the Nation" on CBS.

When moderator Bob Schieffer noted that Obama hadn't had those experiences nor had he ridden in a fighter plane and been shot down, Clark replied: "Well, I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president."

TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT YOUR HEALTH, by Bob Cross

TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT YOUR HEALTH, by Bob Cross

Talking To Your Doctor About Your Health

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

~ From the Constitution of the World Health Organization

The first thing to remember about your doctors is that they work for you. They are highly trained, highly skilled medical professionals that serve as consultants and technicians in your battle against illness. As your paid consultants, they will have opinions; some of these opinions will be valid, some mere personal preference (they’re human, too!). In the end, you are the one responsible for your health because you – not your doctors – will have to suffer the consequences of your choices.

Be efficient
I don’t know any doctors that complain about having too much time on their hands. Doctors feel an intense time pressure that most of us will never know. It’s important to respect the time that you and your medical consultant have together.

Be clear about your objectives:
  • Define your symptoms well – write them down. If possible, send a copy to your doctor a day or two in advance of your visit.
  • Do your own research before your visit (don’t “self-diagnose,” just be as clear about your condition as possible).
  • Discuss your symptoms in terms of frequency, intensity and duration.

Be honest
Doctors need to know everything that may affect their development of a disease-fighting strategy for you. Be clear and honest about your habits:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Exercise frequency
  • Any other habits that could influence the treatment of your health condition.

I suggest that at each visit, you report any and all medications you are taking. Do this in writing to avoid “poly-pharmia” – too many prescriptions! Be sure to add your vitamins and other supplements to this list.

Be resolved
A discussion of vitamins may cause a disagreement between you and your doctor. Some doctors still do not respect the power of nutrients to influence our health. It may be helpful here to remember that doctors are people first. They have views and opinions just like any other person. You can respect their opinion without necessarily agreeing with it. In the end, it is your choice to take supplemental nutrients as you alone will bear the consequences of that choice.

The key issue you need to discuss concerning nutrients is whether or not a specific supplement will have a detrimental effect when combined with your medical treatment. If it does, you will need to discontinue the supplement or change your medications. Any changes you make should be directed by your healthcare provider.

Communicate!
Doctors are your consultants in disease management. They are highly trained and usually quite good in this area. But remember that disease management and healthy living are two different things. Understanding this will keep you from asking your medical consultant to give an opinion beyond their training and expertise.

When you visit your doctor's remember to respect their training and dedication. Form a partnership with your medical consultants. Work together to create an action plan against an illness. As a team, you both want the same thing: success in dealing with the illness. But never forget that it’s your body – so it is your choice. You, not your doctor, will bear the consequences of your choices. For better health, make better choices!

Take Control of Your Health

  • Learn all you can about your medical condition
  • Detail your symptoms in terms of:
    • Frequency
    • Intensity
    • Duration
  • Send questions/concerns before your doctor visit
  • Report medications and nutrients at every visit, in writing
  • Respect the team approach between you and your doctor

HoopGurlz

HoopGurlz

As far back as I can remember, I have had to balance being an athlete with trying to maintain good skin. My teammates and I always tried the newest, coolest products on the market trying to find the magic cures for acne, oily skin and dryness -- usually with little or no success.

My father, a former athlete and coach, recommended that I use Buff Puffs and Sea Breeze to combat my skin issues by scrubbing my face really good, then using the Sea Breeze as an astringent to dry out the acne. He also recommended I lay in the sun to dry out my skin. As an obedient daughter, I did as he told me and began the excruciatingly painful process of making my skin better.

It wasn't until I was in high school that a good friend of mine who had been dealing with similar issues began to show me the light when it came to skincare. She had gone to a dermatologist by this time, and he had recommended her to use certain products that would cleanse the skin instead of stripping it, use a balancing toner to bring back the pH, and a moisturizer to hydrate and restore and protect the skin.

What a revelation!

I was 17 years old and for four years had been doing the complete opposite of what I was supposed to be doing. As the oldest in my family, I was a total guinea pig for skin care and suffered through most of my teens with bad skin. My father finally saw the light as well, allowing us to go to a dermatologist to get some correct advice. My siblings all benefited from this as they began their careers as athletes.

There are three basic skin types, but yours may not be exactly like any of those described because most skin is a mixture of these types. Your skin will be no exception. The basic skin types are oily, combination and dry.

Q: How do you determine what skin type you are?

Rosanna Campisi

Glenn Nelson

The T-zone needs to be handled attentively.

A: First take a look at your skin to determine how your skin functions. The best way to do that is to have a clean face and look at your skin to see where you are oily (most of us are oily through the T-zone), where your skin is breaking out (through the cheek area, chin area, or forehead area), and if there are any dry patches on the face.

• Oily skin -- If your skin is oily you can usually tell because it has a shine to it morning, noon and night. Oily skin tends have more sebum, so it attracts more dirt and dust than dry skin. This makes it prone to black heads and acne.

• Combination skin -- The majority of us has this kind of skin, with a T-zone across the forehead, nose, and chin, and areas of dryness on the cheeks.

• Dry skin -- It looks dry and feels papery to the touch. It has a tendency to flake and often feels tight, especially after washing with soap. It lacks the protective sebum and so it reacts to very hot and very cold weather by tightening up.

Q: How do you decide what is a good skin-care regimen for you?

A: After determining what type of skin you have, get a good routine in place that will support the functioning of your skin and its needs. This will lead to better overall skin health and will combat the bacteria that commonly leads to breakouts. A skin-care routine requires washing your face morning and night, and especially after a workout or game. The body uses sweat to cool itself and release toxins from the skin, so it is important to wash these impurities from the skin, especially when they are combined with makeup.

• Oily complexions require using skin care that uses a non-drying cleanser. Use warm water to loosen dirt and use cold water to rinse. For oily skin, non-alcohol-based astringents are good to use after washing and use a light, non-greasy moisturizer morning and night. If you have very oily skin, a moisturizer isn't needed. For acne areas, you can use spot treatments containing salicylic acid. There are also face washes that contain salicylic acid, usually 1.0 percent, which are good to control acne.

• Combination skin types require a cleanser that is good for a combination skin so it isn't too drying. In the T-zone you can use an alcohol-free astringent to combat the oil but use a light moisturizer over the whole face. You may have to experiment with a few to determine which one works best for you, but try to avoid heavy creams.

• Dry skin requires a mild, creamy cleanser and alcohol-free toner. You will need to moisturize your face every day to help the skin stay supple. Exfoliants are good to use once a week to help with the dry, flaky patches and to also allow the product to penetrate the top layer of the skin more easily.

Q: What other things should I be doing to get the most out of my new skin care?

A: Believe it or not, regular changing of your pillowcase and sheets play an important part in helping your skin stay clear. You wouldn't put on last nights sweaty jersey to walk around in at school and you shouldn't sleep on dirty sheets night after night because they add to the bacteria growth. Don't get obsessive about changing your sheets, once a week is sufficient. Other suggestions are to watch your diet, take along cleansing sheets to games to wipe off afterwards on your face, chest, and back, and to be an advocate to your parents about what you need. If you are proactive then hopefully they will help you with your concerns. Here are a few drugstore brands I recommend for getting a good basic skin care established based on what skin type you are. Here they are in no particular order:

• Almay
• Aveeno
• Burt's Bees
• Kiss My Face
• Neutrogena
• Olay
• Zia Skin Basics

I recommend these brands because most of them are paraben free and more natural. They all have the range of products for you to pick from for your skin type and some specialty products.

For those of you who go to the department stores to shop for skin-care products, these are the lines I recommend to start with, again in no particular order:
• Clinique
• Origins
• Mario Badescu
• Philosophy
• Shiseido

Q: When should I seek the advice of a dermatologist?

A: I believe that a dermatologist should be brought in when all basic skincare has been exhausted and you are finding no solution to your acne situations. They do offer treatments both topical and internal which will offer some help, but you will still have to continue a good skincare routine of washing and moisturizing in order to make the prescribed solutions work.

Mayor Nutter Launches 'Communities Working Together'

The city of Philadelphia is trying a new strategy to make inner-city streets safer and cleaner.

Mayor Michael Nutter has launched the "Communities Working Together" Initiative:

“It could not be a better day to clean up a great part of Philadelphia and it only happens because of you.”

Mayor Nutter says the new initiative enlists community members -- like those who gathered in the 1100 block of Tioga Street -- to work with city departments, including police, licenses and inspections, streets and behavioral health.

Venus Williams of the US in action during her third round match against Maria Martinez Sanchez of Spain, at Wimbledon, Saturday, June, 28, 2008.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- One swing from completing her week's work, Venus Williams toed the baseline, dribbled the ball, gave it a toss and delivered yet another thunderclap serve at sun-kissed Wimbledon.

The ace bounced off the Court 1 backstop as Williams trotted to the net to bid another foe farewell.

The scoreboard said 127 mph, the fastest women's serve ever recorded at Wimbledon. The scoreboard also had Williams winning 6-1, 7-5 Saturday over qualifier Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

It was an upset-filled first week at Wimbledon and a rough one for American tennis, but the nonconformist Williams sisters ignored both trends. Four-time champion Venus and two-time champion Serena won three matches each without dropping a set.

Both advanced to Monday's round of 16, as did No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal on the men's side.

With No. 1-ranked Ana Ivanovic and No. 2 Maria Sharapova eliminated, and with No. 3 Jelena Jankovic limping to victory Saturday, prospects look good for an all-Williams final next weekend.

"The chances were wonderful from the beginning, from round one," Venus said. "That's how we see it. The more we progress, obviously the closer it gets."

It would be their first meeting in a Grand Slam final since Serena beat Venus for the 2003 Wimbledon title.

Potential pitfalls remain, Jankovic foremost among them. But she hurt her left knee in the first set against 17-year-old Caroline Wozniacki.

Jankovic won 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, finishing the match with her leg heavily wrapped. She planned to have an MRI exam before facing Tamarine Tanasugarn on Monday.

"I don't think it's that bad," Jankovic said. "I hope for the best so that I will be able to play my next match."

Unable to overcome injury was French Open runner-up Dinara Safina, who finished in tears as she lost to Shahar Peer 7-5, 6-7 (4), 8-6. Safina, who required treatment of her thighs during at least two changeovers, cried between points and hit half-speed serves in the final game, then double-faulted on match point.

Alla Kudryavtseva had a successful encore to her upset of Sharapova, reaching the fourth round at a major event for the first time by beating Peng Shuai 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

With a late start on Centre Court, Nadal barely beat darkness but easily defeated Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-3. Runner-up to Roger Federer the past two years, Nadal is trying to become the first man to consecutively win the French Open and Wimbledon since Bjorn Borg in 1980.

On Monday he'll play No. 17-seeded Mikhail Youzhny.

In the wake of the worst showing by American men at Wimbledon since 1926, with no one reaching the second week in singles, top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan advanced to the doubles quarterfinals.

But the U.S. curse extended to Russian Dmitry Tursunov, who lives in California, and German Tommy Haas, who lives in Florida. Both lost.

Tursunov was beaten by Janko Tipsarevic, who upset Andy Roddick in the second round. Haas was defeated by Andy Murray, seeking to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

The marquee men's match Monday will be five-time defending champion Federer against 2002 winner Lleyton Hewitt.

Defending women's champion Venus Williams is to play Alisa Kleybanova, and Serena Williams faces unseeded Bethanie Mattek, the only other remaining American. Those matches are back to back on Court 2 - the "Graveyard of Champions" - but the sisters will nonetheless be heavily favored, as usual at Wimbledon, where they've won six of the past eight titles.

Venus and Serena have settled into a groove on grass after enduring third-round upsets at the French Open - only the second time both lost on the same day at a major event. Serena cleared Wimbledon's third-round hurdle Friday, and Venus was in a hurry to follow.

Her opponent was a Spanish left-hander with a lifetime record of 4-7 in Grand Slam matches. Predictably, Martinez Sanchez had no chance in baseline rallies, and the first set was a tennis clinic of sorts, with Williams whacking winners all over the court.

Her serve was especially impressive - she finished with 11 aces and won 33 of 38 points on her first serve. Even Martinez Sanchez's supporters could appreciate the overpowering performance.

"Vamos, Venus," someone shouted.

But in the second set Martinez Sanchez changed strategy and began to play serve and volley. It was a curious tactic to counter Williams' booming groundstrokes, like diving into the barrel of a howitzer, but for a while it worked.

Martinez Sanchez won three games in a row for a 5-4 lead. Then Williams began to treat her like slow traffic on the British motorway, passing her on the left, then on the right, then on the left again.

"I was pretty happy, because she started putting some pressure on, and I had some good answers," Williams said.

Williams won 12 of the final 14 points, the last with the record serve. At 127 mph, it topped the previous Wimbledon high of 126 achieved by both Venus and Serena. Venus holds the women's tour record with a 129 mph serve at last year's U.S. Open.

"The power that I have ... it's a real blessing," she said. "I'm actually never really trying to serve that hard, if that makes any sense. It just comes big. It's just how I serve. It's just me."

Williams celebrated the victory with her customary pirouette and wave, and as she left the stadium, she spotted a friend in the stands. She put her thumb to her ear and her little finger to her lips and mouthed the words "Call me."

Time to start making dinner plans for the second week.

A firefighter with the Wilson Fire Company who suffered a heart attack at the scene of a fire has been denied workers' compensation.

Assistant Fire Chief William Saxe responded to a 2 a.m. fire at Fiorelli Plaza in Peckville on March 31, where he had a heart attack that left him in critical condition at Community Medical Center. He is now back home, but declined to comment, citing legal matters involving his case.

Blakely officials confirmed Mr. Saxe filed for workers' compensation through the borough, but the borough's insurance carrier, the State Workers' Insurance Fund, denied Mr. Saxe's claim.

The insurance fund is managed by a state board made up of Sandi Vito, secretary of the Department of Labor and Industry; Joel Ario, the insurance commissioner; and state Treasurer Robin Wiessmann. Officials with the State Workers' Insurance Fund declined to comment on the claim.

Borough Council President Robert Munley discussed the issue recently, concerned about the misconception that council had some say in the matter.

"The Borough Council is excluded from the workers' comp process. Just like a typical insurance policy, we pay a premium to the insurance company for coverage," he said. "Council has no input on the determination or award of benefits. The insurance provider makes this determination."

He couldn't say why the carrier denied the claim.

Firefighter John Chichilla said he was astounded when he heard the news.

"I don't know the details, but it seems to me like he should have been and should still be compensated," Mr. Chichilla said. "He wasn't looking for a golden goose. Just to recover what I think is rightfully his.

Judges Barry Dozor, Maureen Fitzparick, F.X. Coll, Media Family Courthouse Judges History of Mental Illness; Antonio W. Cook by Van Stone vspfoundation

Antonio Washington-Cook, a Philly native, is this week's positive kid involved with reading the SCOOP newspaper and the Phila. Front Page News, www.frontpagenews.us. The Thoughts of Black Men, WVSR-AM, and Dr. Van Stone are working hard to keep Youth Stars like Antonio safe and busy. Perhaps we can help set up a personal visit between Antonio and childcare lovers such as Phila. Councilman Jones, PA State Rep Payton, Congressman Bob Brady, and even Phila. Mayor Nutter as a healthy fun summer trip.

For over 400 years or so families living in the section of Delaware Pennsylvania called Media have been participants in courts. Unfortunately, history shows that many of the Media District Court justices were lawyers having some sort of mental illness long before they became honorable judges. And these same District Court justices have been making decisions in relation to public policy and the education of children living in the state of PA. Therefore it does not take a scholar on the subject of children and the family courthouse to realize that the goal for judges in Media Delaware County Family Courthouse to improve the happiness of kids and positive parents is not being achieved. Nor will it ever be achieved, for several important reasons.

First, public policy affects every aspect of children and parental rights relating to judges deciding who can no longer raise their own biological kids. Family court judges decision making base cannot be beyond any individual’s or family's capacity to survive without the male or female parent. But, Media District Court Judges knowing this still have an extreme high rate of terminating all rights of parents, especially the male parent. And doing so usually ends the kids' suffering from neglect, depression, and slow-achieving. Judges such as B. Dozor, M. Fitzpartick, and F.X. Coll have a caseload ending in repetitively displacement of small children from both the male and the female parent. Second, there are over 17 Media District Court judges, 10 affecting Philadelphia County, 5 affecting Bucks County, and 3 affecting Delaware County and numerous others all creating and carrying out decisions to terminate fatherly rights without necessarily any consistency with public policy. No one can identify all these justices decision making with child or adult psychiatrist support, let alone what each is doing. Third, city and state policy like the city of Philadelphia and the state of Texas have not changed in any degree it’s view on terminating the rights of male parents in over 1,000 years.

For the first time known to residents who reside in counties in the state of Pennsylvania, psychiatrist and public law makers are together concerned about the mental health history of some of the justices serving Media Delaware County Family court. Questions are being raised about public policies for children and their own families in relation to what is happening in Media. Many want a better understanding of such court decisions and the know-how of such terminating rights of parents as it does effect changes in Philadelphians and their Delaware County neighbors. There is a therapeutic component that should be a comprehensive approach to the total history of lawyers who become family court judges, especially in Media Delaware County Family Courthouse. Evaluations might show that certain justice’s legal history began with overcoming emotional difficulties from both a psychological and psychiatric perspective. It is not surprising to know that particular authorities of the past dealing with courts, such as kings and judges, had mental illness that played a very frightening role in the result of children being unhappy for life.

Phila. Kids News Now: Philadelphia is facing a negative problem where Media Delaware County Family Courthouse Judges are terminating all communication of fathers with their own kids. Still many Philly kids are doing pretty good considering the plight. Antonio Washington-Cook is 8-years-old. And he is a great kid who represents Philly well despite the fact that many kids are coping with today’s crisis. Antonio loves basketball and the W.W.E World Wide Wrestling Entertainment Federation. And at such a young age, he is also a youth model for The Philadelphia Front Page News, an online newspaper located at www.frontpagenews.us as well as and Philly Radio Station WVSR-AM 1360.1. Antonio Washington is such a delightful young man for his young age.

We as adults should always be involved with our youth interest and education, as this can be so very important to instill hard work in them. Antonio Washington is a very special young man and his mom, Radio Personality and Television Executive, Antoinette “Tony,” “AC,” Cook, (WVSR-AM Philadelphia) is so very proud of him.
