Not even Brian Westbrook could save the Eagles this time.
Westbrook, who has been carrying the Eagles all year, tried to do it one last time Sunday, in the latest must-win game of the Eagles' season. They trailed 28-24 Sunday to Seattle, despite 139 total yards from Westbrook, including a 29-yard touchdown run that gave the Eagles (briefly) the lead in the third quarter.
With 1:37 left, Westbrook was in as the punt returner. It was save-the-game time, and Westbrook got the call.
"I should have told (Seattle punter Ryan Plackemeier) to kick the ball out of bounds," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. "I didn't think about it, and I should have. I should have been more aware of him in that situation. He's a great football player."
Westbrook fielded the punt, made one move and took off down the left sideline. He made it 64 yards before two Seahawks pushed him out of bounds, but he gave the offense the ball on Seattle's 14-yard line with 1:16 left. Surely that was enough.
"Brian's amazing," Sheldon Brown said. "I was hoping he'd score."
Under normal circumstances, it might not be fair to ask Westbrook to make a 70-yard sprint and then go out and carry the offense. But these are not normal circumstances. Still Westbrook did not get the ball on any of the Eagles' last three offensive snaps -- and the final play was A.J. Feeley's fourth interception that ended the game.
"You get Brian to do what he does, just make plays, and we can't capitalize," Brian Dawkins said. "It doesn't feel too good."
The Eagles did not capitalize on Westbrook's return just as they have not capitalized on his remarkable season. One of the best offensive seasons in Eagles history is being wasted, as Westbrook's heroics keep coming up just short.
"Everybody's going out there and giving everything they have," Westbrook said. "This team is comprised of guys that are very unselfish and we're going to go out there and try to do everything we can. I try to hold up my end and do my part.
"I'm frustrated because we're not winning, and we're good enough to win football games. We're just not doing it. My stats, and my numbers aren't such a big deal. I would love to have victories. I want my team to have a sense of success above my success."
He keeps trying. Westbrook leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage, and Sunday edged just 6 yards from another 1,000 yard rushing season. He's scored 11 touchdowns and carried the offense all year.
But the Eagles just can't capitalize
