For those who might be interested in exactly how one rides a motorcycle, here's ....

HOW TO RIDE A TOURING MOTORCYCLE IN 14 EASY STEPS:
(by Joel Perlish)

1. Walk around the bike and make sure tires are full and nothing is hanging loose, and if you have bags make sure zippers are all zipped.

2. Throw a leg over the bike and sit on seat facing forward.

3. Place key in ignition switch and turn to on.

4. Making sure bike is not in gear, push electric start button. (Unless you have a really really old motorcycle - in which case, while straddling the bike, try to kick start the thing!)

5. Okay, so you're on the seat. Now, pull in the CLUTCH LEVER with your left hand.

6. Seconds after that, use your left foot toes to depress the GEAR SHIFTER out of neutral and DOWN into the first gear.

7. Then, making sure that nothing is in front of you, and the coast is clear, and your insurance is paid up, slowly release the clutch with your left hand (allowing the bike to go in gear) while at the same time gripping and turning the THROTTLE with your right hand (to give the bike gas).

8. If all that is done correctly and there is fuel in the tank, the motorcycle should be moving forward either smoothly or herky-jerky (depending on your shifting skills and ability).

9. Okay, you are moving. Now, when you are accelerating a bit faster, you need to let up on the gas with your right hand, and you pull in the clutch lever again with your left hand. Then either toe-shift or heel-shift (if your bike has one of those), with your left foot, and move the toe shifter UP through neutral and into second gear. Then release the shift lever.

10. You now should be moving faster. The shifting continues in the above sequence through usually three or four more gears. If you need to shift down, you pull in the clutch lever with your left hand, tap the gear shift with your left foot down while releasing the gas with your right hand. Then release the clutch lever. Be sure, of course, that you are going the proper speed for whatever gear you are in - or else you will stall out - and that is NOT a good thing - especially in traffic (or in front of a lot of other motorcyclists at a stop light)!

11. Okay, now about stopping. You should be ready at all times to either use your right hand BRAKE LEVER which control the front brakes, or your right foot BRAKE PEDAL which stops the back wheel. The most recommended way to stop is to use your right hand brake lever and your right foot brake pedal applying pressure evenly at the same time.

13. While all the above is being done you need to watch carefully the road ahead being sure that cars do not pull out in front of you, that you are not too close to the car ahead, that little children are not about to run into the roadway, and that the light is not changing to red.

14.Naturally, and above all, you also need to continually scan the speedometer making sure you are not going over the speed limit. You also need to be sure you are not about to run over nails, boards, squirrels, or trash that is left on the roadway.
