A Severn man was arrested on drug charges Tuesday evening after police were called to his home because his 5-year-old son had accidentally taken methadone and wasn't breathing.
Emergency officials were called to a home in the 1200 block of Reece Road around 8 p.m. to help resuscitate the child, who was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center for treatment.
Police said the child's father, Paul Brooks, 28, gave them a bottle of methadone that they discovered had been purchased illegally. Methadone is often used to either relieve pain or as a way for drug addicts to kick their addictions.
Investigators further searched the home and found lots of other drugs, including suspected cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine. Officers said they also found a handgun and a rifle.
Brooks was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine; possession of a firearm in the commission of a drug trafficking crime and one count of firearm accessible to a minor.
More charges, including those of child neglect, are pending.
